How to use it

Add up every face you're boarding — each wall and ceiling — into one total area, in square feet or square metres. Pick the sheet size you plan to hang, set a waste allowance, and read the sheet count. The screw, tape, and compound figures update alongside it.

The math

Sheets = ⌈ area × (1 + waste) ÷ sheet area ⌉, where a 4×8 sheet is 32 ft², 4×10 is 40 ft², and 4×12 is 48 ft². Metric areas are converted at 1 m² = 10.764 ft² before dividing. Finishing estimates use ~36 screws per sheet, ~0.37 ft of tape per ft², and one 4.5-gallon compound box per ~460 ft².

What the numbers mean

The highlighted sheet count is what to buy, and the sublabel shows the area it actually covers including waste. Because sheets only come whole, the covered area is usually a little more than your input — that overage is normal and useful for offcuts. The fastener and mud figures tell you how much finishing material to pick up on the same trip.

Practical tips

  • Hang ceilings first, then walls, so wall sheets help support the ceiling edges. Account for both in your total area.
  • Buy a little extra compound. Mud is cheap and the first coat always uses more than you expect; running out mid-coat leaves lap marks.
  • Longer sheets, fewer seams. If your walls suit 4×12s, you'll tape and sand less — the slowest part of the job.

How many drywall sheets do I need?

Divide the total surface area by the area of one sheet, then round up. A 4×8 sheet covers 32 ft², a 4×10 covers 40 ft², and a 4×12 covers 48 ft². This calculator adds your waste allowance first, then rounds up to whole sheets.

How much waste should I allow for drywall?

10% is a reasonable default for a room with normal door and window openings — offcuts around openings rarely get reused. Complex layouts with lots of corners, soffits, or small walls can justify 15%. Simple rectangular rooms can get away with less.

Should I subtract doors and windows?

For ordering, most pros don't — the cutouts become waste rather than usable sheets, and the waste allowance covers them. If your openings are very large (a wall of windows or a garage door), measure the net area instead and use a smaller waste percentage.

How accurate are the screw, tape, and mud estimates?

The sheet count is exact for your inputs. The fasteners and finishing materials use standard coverage rules of thumb — about 36 screws per sheet, roughly 0.37 ft of tape per square foot, and one 4.5-gallon box of ready-mix compound per ~460 ft² for tape plus three coats. Treat them as buy-this-much estimates, not precise counts.

Longer sheets (4×12) mean fewer seams to tape and finish, which is faster and looks better — but they're heavier and harder to handle in tight spaces. 4×8 is the easiest to carry and the most widely stocked. Match the sheet to your wall lengths to minimise cuts.
