How to use the crypto converter

Choose a direction — Crypto → Fiat to see what your crypto is worth in dollars, euros, or another currency, or Fiat → Crypto to see how much crypto a given amount of money can buy. Enter the amount, pick the coin and fiat currency, and the conversion appears instantly.

Where prices come from

Prices are aggregated from hundreds of exchanges by CoinGecko, a widely used reference for crypto market data. The number you see is a volume-weighted average — it's not any one exchange's price, but a representative market midpoint. Our cache refreshes hourly; live prices move every second.

Reading the numbers

The "1 BTC = $X" row is the current reference price — useful for comparing quickly across currencies. The "1 USD = X BTC" inverse row shows the fractional amount of crypto one unit of fiat buys, which matters for smaller purchases or dollar-cost-averaging strategies.

Volatility and timing

Crypto prices can swing several percent in a single hour, especially for smaller coins. Bitcoin and Ethereum tend to be less volatile than mid-cap altcoins. For any real transaction, check your exchange's live price at the moment of execution — the rate here is a ballpark, not a quote. During major news events or market stress, prices can move 10-20% in a day.

Understanding spreads and fees

When you buy or sell on an exchange, you'll see two prices: the bid (what someone will pay you) and the ask (what someone is charging). The midpoint of these is roughly what CoinGecko reports. On top of the spread, exchanges charge trading fees (typically 0.1-1% depending on volume and tier). Peer-to-peer and cash-based services like Bitcoin ATMs charge 5-15% — much more than an online exchange.

Stablecoins, briefly

USDT and USDC are "stablecoins" designed to track the US dollar 1:1. They're commonly used on exchanges instead of fiat — easier to transfer between platforms. The converter will show them as approximately $1 each, though they can drift a fraction of a cent either way. A sustained deviation from the peg is a signal to research what's happening — historical de-pegs have resulted in investor losses.

This is not investment advice

Crypto is highly volatile and speculative. Past returns don't predict future results. Never invest more than you can afford to lose, understand the tax implications in your jurisdiction, and if you're new to crypto, start by reading before transacting. This tool is a reference, not a recommendation.

Frequently asked questions

Where do the crypto prices come from?

We use the free CoinGecko API, which aggregates price data from hundreds of exchanges worldwide to produce a volume-weighted average. These prices are widely cited as a reliable market reference — more stable than any single exchange's quote.

How often do prices update?

Our cache refreshes every hour. For active trading, always use your exchange's live order book — crypto prices can move several percent in minutes during volatile periods. This tool is best for ballpark estimates, portfolio checks, and answering questions like 'how much is 0.5 BTC worth?'

Why is my exchange quoting a different price?

Three main reasons: (1) exchanges charge a spread between buy and sell prices, (2) each exchange has different liquidity and fees, (3) live prices move continuously while this tool caches hourly. Expect 0.5-2% variance from mid-market on a liquid exchange, more on smaller platforms.

Which coins are supported?

We track 20 major cryptocurrencies by market cap: BTC, ETH, USDT, BNB, SOL, USDC, XRP, ADA, DOGE, TRX, AVAX, LINK, DOT, MATIC, LTC, BCH, XLM, XMR, ATOM, UNI. If you need a specific altcoin, CoinGecko's website supports 10,000+ coins — this tool focuses on the major ones most people search for.

Is this tax or financial advice?

No. This is a reference converter only. For tax calculations, use the price your exchange actually recorded on the transaction date. For investment decisions, consult a licensed financial advisor and do your own research. Cryptocurrency trading involves significant risk, including total loss of capital.

Does this include stablecoins?

Yes — USDT and USDC are included. They're designed to stay pegged at $1, but can deviate slightly (usually within a fraction of a cent) based on market supply and demand. If a stablecoin's price materially deviates from its peg, that's typically a signal to investigate before using it.
