How to use the currency converter
Enter an amount, pick the source and target currencies from the dropdowns, and see the converted value instantly. Use the swap arrow between the fields to flip direction. The calculator also shows the inverse rate — useful when pricing something in both currencies.
Where the rates come from
We use the European Central Bank's official reference rates via the Frankfurter.app API. The ECB publishes a single daily rate for each major currency around 4 PM Frankfurt time (Monday-Friday). These are mid-market rates — the midpoint between buy and sell prices on interbank markets, before any retail markup.
Why real-world rates differ
Every time you exchange money, someone takes a cut. Banks typically mark up the mid-market rate by 2-5%. Credit cards charge 1-3% foreign transaction fees (some cards waive this). Airport exchange booths can mark up 7-10%. Wire transfers from traditional banks often combine an explicit fee (~$25-50) with an inferior rate (2-4% markup). Services like Wise, Revolut, and Charles Schwab debit cards come much closer to the mid-market rate — usually within 0.5%.
Understanding the rate
A rate of 1 USD = 0.92 EUR means: one US dollar buys 0.92 euros. The inverse (1 EUR = 1.087 USD) means one euro buys about $1.087. These two numbers must be reciprocals — if you multiply them, you'll get 1. When a rate "goes up" for USD against EUR, that means each dollar buys more euros (stronger dollar / weaker euro).
Tips for using the rate well
Travel: withdraw local currency from an ATM with a no-FX-fee debit card for the best rate. Online purchases:pay in the merchant's local currency, not your home currency ("dynamic currency conversion" from the merchant's processor is usually worse than your card's rate). International transfers: compare Wise, Revolut, and your bank for larger sums — differences of 1-3% on a $10,000 transfer add up to real money.
Limitations
This is a reference tool, not a trading platform. Rates lag the market by hours (daily ECB fix + hourly cache). For high-frequency or large-value transactions, use your bank or FX provider's live rate at the moment of execution. Cryptocurrencies are not supported — see our separate crypto converter for those.
Frequently asked questions
Where do the exchange rates come from?▾
Rates are sourced from the European Central Bank (ECB) via the free Frankfurter.app API. The ECB publishes daily reference rates for about 30 major world currencies. These are mid-market rates — the rate banks and trading desks see, without retail markup.
How often do the rates update?▾
Our cache refreshes every hour. The ECB itself publishes once per business day (around 4 PM CET Monday-Friday). On weekends and holidays, Friday's rate carries over until the next business day.
Why does my bank give me a worse rate than this?▾
Retail currency exchange always includes a markup — typically 2-5% for banks, and up to 7-10% at airport kiosks. The rate you see here is the interbank mid-market rate, not what any bank or card will actually charge you. For real-world estimates, subtract 1-3% for a good debit card, 3-5% for a credit card without foreign transaction fees, and 5-10% for worst-case retail exchange.
Can I use this for tax or accounting?▾
For personal tax filings, most tax authorities (IRS, HMRC, etc.) accept ECB rates or the published rate for the day of the transaction. Check your jurisdiction's specific requirements. For business accounting and invoicing, always use the rate your payment processor actually applied, not this reference rate.
Does this support cryptocurrency?▾
No — this converter handles traditional fiat currencies only. For Bitcoin, Ethereum, or other cryptos, use our dedicated crypto converter, which pulls live prices from CoinGecko.
Which currencies are supported?▾
